WHY COVID SAFETY RULES COULD ADD 91% TO THE COST OF A FAMILY TRIP ABROAD

- By Giles Sheldrick

FOREIGN family holidays this summer could cost as much as 91 per cent more because of Covid protocols, says research by hotel booking site Hoo which looked at requirements for popular countries not on the red list.

FRANCE: Families hopping over the Channel are likely to see the biggest rise in holiday costs. A week-long Paris visit will be about £460 per person.

But travellers must take a Covid test before departure at £120, a second on arrival at £50 and a third test to return costing £60. A further two tests are then required for all travellers two and eight days after coming back to the UK costing £190.That means £420.

GREECE: Quarantine rules have been dropped for travellers from more than 30 nations – if they have been jabbed or tested negative for Covid-19.

However the same additional costs will be incurred for those travelling to Greece as France – the only difference being the test on arrival is free.

It means an additional £370 per person, increasing the cost of a sevennight stay in a popular destination like Crete by around 68 per cent.

ITALY: Travelling to Italy requires the same testing regime as both Greece and France. But the test before departure is lower at £60, with the test on arrival also free. The total of £310 means the average cost of a holiday to Rome will be around 63 per cent more.

SPAIN: No test is required on arrival, but like France and Greece, the cost of a test before travelling sits at £120.This means travelling will cost £370 more, increasing a week-long holiday to a popular destination such asTenerife from £681 per person to £1,051.

USA: While no test is required on arrival, one is needed in order to travel at £60 with a second in order to come home at £71.With the average trip to Orlando costing £891 per person, the additional £322 to cover testing requirements means a trip to Disney World will be 36 per cent more.
