FIVE FABULOUS GERMAN WINES

-

1 Schieferkopf Riesling Baden Germany, 2018 (£14, 12%)

This 100 per cent riesling, from southern Germany’s Baden region, typifies the best of the grape: fruity and floral with citrus and plum notes and a fabulous minerally structure on the palate. Available from Vino Wines, Islington Wine and Eton Vintners.

2 Dornfelder Trocken, Anselmann 2019 (£8.95, 14%)

Produced by a family business that can trace its roots back to the 12th century, this bright, ripe red is a classic. Full of juicy fruitness with a little tannin to leaven it. Available from The Wine Society.

3 Shhh...it’s Riesling (£6, 11.5%)

Ignore the slightly tacky label, this is a bargain alternative to sauvignon blanc if you’re looking for something similar but different. Tons of citrus flavours and a nice, sharp finish make it a delight. Available from the Co-op.

4 Terroir Sauvignon Blanc Kalkstein, Pfalz (£9.85, 12.5%)

For the real thing, this zesty sauvignon blanc is a treat with aromas of yellow pepper and passion fruit. Delicious with food or simply enjoy on its own – either way it is a winner you’ll want to return to. Available from Booths.

5 Taste the Difference Rheinhessen Pinot Noir (£8, 12.5%)

This light, fruity pinot noir with oodles of strawberry and raspberry flavours and velvety tannins is best in class for the price. A delicious example of the benefits (at least to German producers and their fans) of climate change! Available from Sainsbury’s.
