1741: George Stevenson became the first fighter to lose his life as a direct result of a prize fight. He died after a bout with Jack Broughton at Taylor’s Booth, Tottenham Court Road, London.
1897: Batley beat St Helens 10-3 in front of 13,492 fans at Headingley to win the first Northern Union Cup (now the Challenge Cup).
1992: Tottenham’s Gary Lineker received the
Football Writers’ Player of the Year award for the second time. He first won it in 1986, while at Everton.
