Mary’s 100 cakes are recipe for charity success
THE family of Capt Sir Tom Moore are following directly in his footsteps by walking 100 laps of their garden as a nationwide challenge commemorates his achievements.
Supporters are being asked to raise money for the Captain Tom Foundation, or their chosen charity, with a sponsored feat based on the number 100 in the Captain Tom 100.
Many celebrities have signed up – ex-footballer David Beckham is doing 100 keepy uppies, TV cook Dame Mary Berry will bake 100 cakes and former champion athlete Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill is due to perform 100 pogo jumps.
Meanwhile Yorkshire and England cricket star Joe Root will hit a ball 100 times – and acting legend Dame Judi Dench plans to eat 100 chocolates.
The challenge runs from today until Monday.
Capt Sir Tom’s daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore said: “The whole Captain Tom 100 challenge was something that my father was firmly round the table talking with us about. It has his imprint in it.”
She said her father loved beaches so much he might have joined in by building 100 sandcastles. Hannah, right, added: “There was only one thing we could do and that was carry on what my father started by walking 100 laps. It’s tinged with a little sadness but mostly absolutely about hope for the future and ensuring that his lasting legacy of hope lives on.”
Her son Benjie, 17, said the Captain Tom 100 has made people smile: “I know he would be smiling as well and that’s the most important thing.”
While Capt Sir Tom’s granddaughter Georgia, 12, said the challenge was about making sure you “do what you love, like baking and sport”.
