1 The Society’s Argentine Malbec 2020 (£8.50, 14%)

A great starting point if you’re a stranger to Argentinia­n malbec, no matter how unlikely that might be. A splash of cabernet sauvignon (eight per cent) makes it especially smooth with a fruity, peppery finish. Available from The Wine Society.

2 Calvet Malbec Reserve (£7.50, 13.5%)

Notes of blackberry, black liquorice and a light touch of spice, combined with a fleshy structure and big taste, make this French malbec from the Languedoc region an appealing and good-value choice. Available from Tesco.

3 Zuccardi Serie A Malbec Tempranill­o (From £12.99, 14.5%)

This Argentinia­n malbectemp­ranillo (20%) blend is another marriage made in heaven. Rich and fruity with notes of black plum and enough tannins to set your tongue atingle in a delightful manner. Available from Majestic. 4

Co-op Irresistib­le Organic Fairtrade Malbec (£7.50, 13%)

A lovely, full-bodied red from north-west Argentina, bursting with fruity flavours like cherry and plum. Available from The Co-op.

5 Taste the difference Sparkling Malbec (£10, 13%)

For something different, this Argentinia­n sparkling malbec takes some beating. With aromas of blossom and fruits, with cherry and citrus flavours aplenty, it’s well-balanced with a welcome sweetness and fizz. A malbec you can drink with seafood. Available in-store from Sainsbury’s.

6 Masi Tupungato Passo Doble Malbec Corvina (£12.19, 13.5%)

This malbec from the heart of Argentina’s Mendoza region has been refermente­d with Italian light dried corvina grapes (15%), enhancing its depth and savourines­s and maintainin­g a nicely balanced acidity. Intensely fruity with delicate spices. Available from All About Wine.
