Singapore teen death threat rap
A TEENAGER from Singapore is facing up to two years in jail after being charged with sending death threats to Brighton striker Neal Maupay.
Derek Ng De Ren, 19, has been charged with harassment for allegedly threatening to kill Maupay, right, and his family.
The threats, via Instagram, are alleged to have been sent after Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno suffered a serious knee injury following a challenge by Maupay in a game on June 20 last year.
On June 24, Ng is alleged to have sent a direct message to Maupay that read: “You think you will get away for injuring Leno? No way in hell bruv… But don’t worry
you will be safe you won’t be hurt. It’s more fun watching you feel pain when loved ones go through suffering.”
The next day, Maupay had another message containing an expletive and on June 26 one which read: “Your family will be attacked later in the day, just watch.”
On July 1 another message stated: “You think by reporting my account you’re safe? I will kill you and your family.”
The court heard that Ng was charged with using “threatening words with the intent to cause distress”. He faces four charges under Singapore’s Protection from Harassment Act.
If convicted, he could be fined up to £2,700, jailed for up to six months or both on each count.
The messages were reported to the Premier League via its online abuse reporting system.
In August, the Premier League said its investigators had tracked the person allegedly responsible to Singapore.
A club statement said: “Brighton & Hove Albion has welcomed the prosecution of a social media user. The club has a zero tolerance policy on abuse.”
