Plan to rein in ‘Big Six’
THE Premier League are to introduce an Owners’ Charter to be signed by the individuals behind the 20 top-flight clubs.
“Breaches of these rules and the charter will be subject to significant sanctions,” the league vowed in a get-tough statement as they reiterated their resolve to hold to account the ‘Big Six’ behind the failed European Super League.
“We are determined to establish the truth of what happened and hold those clubs
accountable for their decisions and actions,” it read.
The Premier League, led by chief executive Richard Masters, have vowed to work alongside politicians to make any future attempts to hijack the national game illegal.
“We are enlisting the support of Government to bring in appropriate legislation to protect football’s open pyramid, principles of sporting merit and the integrity of the football community,” they said.
The league already have a Chairman’s Charter, which calls on those figures to “behave with the utmost good faith and honesty to each other” and “comply with the laws of the game and follow Premier League rules, not only to the letter but also to their spirit.”
Now the authorities are targeting owners with a code of conduct that will be much more specific in detail and will commit those at the very top of clubs to the “core principles of the Premier League”.
In a separate statement, the FA confirmed they were leading the attempts to look at legislation to stop any future breakaway threat.
