PICKS OF THE DAY
Gardening: Gardeners’ World, BBC2, 9pm
After Monty Don treated us to a masterclass on growing Mediterranean herbs, planting lily bulbs for summer scent and what to do with your vegetable garden, it’s the turn of green-fingered Adam Frost (left) to show us how to make the most out of our gardens. He gives his tips on lawn repair, grows some unusual vegetables and plants a seasonal container. Meanwhile, Advolly Richmond is on hand as she brings us up to date on the inspiring history of lawns.
Film: Hunter Killer, Film4, 9pm
While narratively it may not amount to much more than a lot of shouting, there is an old-school charm here that makes this action thriller the perfect guilty pleasure. Unconventional submarine skipper Joe Glass (Gerard Butler, above) is sent to investigate the torpedoing of US and Russian vessels and ends up trying to rescue the Russian president. Co-starring, Gary Oldman and Common.
Comedy: This Time With Alan Partridge, BBC1, 9.30pm
The gaffe-prone presenter is now firmly established as co-host of BBC One magazine show This Time. Alan is relishing his late-flourishing career and the chance to showcase his broadcasting chops to the nation every weekday following an unfortunate era of working in hyperlocal radio and presenting corporate videos. As another edition of This Time stumbles onto the airwaves, a new make-up artist puts a spring in Alan’s step, while a face from his 1990s fiasco Knowing Me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge returns to make amends. Comedy, starring Steve Coogan, Susannah Fielding, Felicity Montagu and Tim Key.
Soap: Coronation Street, ITV, 7.30pm/8.30pm
As hospitalised Nina (Mollie Gallagher, above) regains consciousness, she tells Roy and Abi that all she can remember of the evening was seeing Corey and his mates. Worried sick about Seb, Abi asks Kevin to cancel their wedding. Meanwhile, Corey covers his tracks by telling Kelly to say nothing. In the second episode, Corey swears to Asha he’s innocent, but wants her to provide him with an alibi.
Music: Britain’s Favourite 80s Song, C5, 10pm
Jackie Brambles narrates this fascinating look back at 1989, the era of Madonna (right), Milli Vanilli and Jason Donovan. Contributors Toyah Willcox, Paul Gambaccini, Cheryl Baker and Jenny Powell add their thoughts on the year when the Bangles’ Eternal Flame was a massive hit, Lisa Stansfield sang All Around The World, and Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers were almost unstoppable with their take on novelty pop. Last in the series.
