WE’RE a nation choc full of snack lovers – with most people experiencing six intense cravings a week.

The most popular treat is milk chocolate, with nearly six in ten of us regularly tucking in for a boost.

In second place is white chocolate (34 per cent) followed by chocolate fudge cake (31 per cent)...and the theme continues with brownies (26 per cent) fourth.

Apple crumble breaks into the top ten at five followed by cookie dough and sausage rolls before chocolate makes a comeback in ice cream, tying with toffee and cheesecake (21 per cent).

Nearly three in 10 people polled by Müller Yogurt and Desserts admitted to experiencing a sudden desire for a certain food almost daily.

The most common yearning is for something sweet. And the most popular time to hanker for a little something is 3pm, the poll discovered.

Psychologist Honey Langcaster-James said: “There are some highly complex dynamics at play when it comes to understanding food cravings.

“People tend to reach for sweet foods especially when they’re stressed or tired, and often turn to those foods that have been deemed ‘forbidden’ such as chocolate or toffee.

“These come up high in the list partly because of the biological impact they have on the brain, partly because they are often readily available in the general environment.

“It also partly due to the phenomena of ‘learned behaviour’, with associations with particular foods often going back to early childhood.”

This is borne out by fizzy cola bottles being a common craving of 12 per cent of the population and cake batter much loved by 10 per cent.

Savoury favourites include bacon sandwiches (20 per cent) and salt and vinegar crisps (19 per cent).

But the nation’s top picks also include unexpected cravings – for gherkins (14 per cent), candy floss (eight per cent), fish paste (five per cent) and anchovies (four per cent).

Harrods is relying on the nation’s sweet tooth after opening its renovated Chocolate Hall yesterday in Knightsbridge, central London.
