Weekly food waste collections planned for homes in England

- By Steph Spyro

ALL homes could have food bins collected weekly and regular free garden waste pickups as the drive to save the planet ramps up.

The added rounds in England from 2023 would save also save households money – an estimated £100million alone from ending charges for garden debris.

Local authorities currently decide whether to even provide the service and usually bill people for it on top of council tax.

Environment Secretary George Eustice said: “Householders want more frequent recycling collections.

“Regular food and garden waste collections will ensure that they can get rid of their rubbish faster, at no additional cost to them.

“Our proposals will boost recycling rates, and ensure that less rubbish is condemned to landfill.”

People can have their say on the plans for eight weeks from today, when the Government will reveal other ways it intends to make recycling easier.

These include publishing a clear list of materials all councils and waste firms must collect from homes and businesses.

The Daily Express Green Britain Needs You crusade is calling for tax breaks to make it easier to go green and greater protection of nature. The Government has an ambitious target of eliminating all avoidable waste by 2050.

Just over 10 million tons of rubbish from homes was sent for recycling in 2019.

Another 440,000 tons of food scraps were collected across England.

The Government wants at least 65 per cent of municipal trash recycled by 2035, with a maximum of 10 per cent going to landfill.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said: “This means we will end the confusion for millions of homes and businesses having different collections in different areas, helping households recycle more and send less waste to landfill.

“The proposals for consistent collections are part of the Government’s wider programme of major waste reforms which will boost recycling, step up our war on plastic pollution and tackle litter.”
