Meghan’s happy to deal with an old foe

- By Richard Palmer

THE Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced a global partnership to promote gender equality with a firm Meghan rebuked for sexism when she was 11.

Their Archewell Foundation has done a deal with Procter & Gamble, the American multinational.

The Duchess criticised the firm in 1993 over a dishwashing liquid advert that included the line: “Mothers around America are fighting greasy pots and pans.”

Meghan appeared in an interview with Nick News, on Nickelodeon, to talk about her campaign, saying she was “furious” at the advert for P&G’s Ivory Clear, adding: “When they heard this, the boys in my class started saying, ‘Yeah, that’s where women belong – in the kitchen’.”

Change

She wrote to the company, asking it to change the advert to “people all over America” and the firm subsequently amended its language.

Now, 28 years on, her and Harry’s foundation will work with Procter & Gamble to help girls and women by creating more inclusive websites, encouraging resilience, and using sport to boost women and girls’ self-esteem.

In a statement it said: “Through Archewell Foundation, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are on a mission to build a more equitable and just future for women and girls.

“In this partnership, Archewell Foundation and P&G will put a priority focus on gender equity.”

It added: “The partnership will elevate the voices of adolescent girls to ensure their point of view and lived experience is heard at the tables where decisions are made.”
