Appliances of science

- By Deborah Stone

WHAT would we do without our electronic and wifi-enabled gadgets? Homes Of The Future, a new Vodafone report, says the pandemic has created an even greater reliance on technology and its experts predict pet-sitting robots, drones that monitor home temperature and air quality plus tech-enabled care to recognise when someone has fallen, then notify callers.

While we wait for this brave new world there are plenty of new or improved gizmos, from electric bikes and robot lawnmowers to vacuum cleaners.

For instance, the City E-Trends bike is a good basic entry-level option and more affordable now than when e-bikes were first launched. It’s also a boon for less active people who like cycling.

Also more affordable, but better equipped than ever, are robot lawnmowers, with Stihl’s iMow one of the best on the market.

There’s no going back to hauling a lawnmower from the back of a shed after a Stihl iMow.You can programme it to cut at set times or download the iMow app to control it remotely as it cuts, shreds clippings and uses them to mulch and feed your lawn.

And cordless ROIDMI vacuum cleaners have antiviral and antibacterial technology, with a clip-on water tank for simultaneously vacuuming and wiping hard floors, while its six-layer micro-particle filtration captures 99.9 per cent of pollen and dust particles

Alternatively, just have fun with the new fourth generation Amazon Echo Dot with a stand shaped like Grogu from StarWars.

May the force be with you.
