James Corden: I hope we’ll be Gavin one last episode

- By Nicola Methven

WHEN Nessa proposed to Smithy at the end of 2019’s Gavin & Stacey Christmas special, 18 million viewers were left on tenterhooks.

Now James Corden has hinted that another instalment of the BBC comedy is being plotted, to reveal whether or not his character ties the knot with his on-offWelsh lover.

But the actor said the next one, whenever it comes, would certainly be the last.

He added: “I do think that, if we ever did another one, that would be the end of it.”

James said he and fellow writer and co-star Ruth Jones, had not made any plans yet.

However, he said: “When we wrote that last special we never really thought whether we’d make another one after it. But it’s so open-ended I think it would be a shame to leave it there.”

James, who lives in the US, has just shed 23 pounds by eating healthily and exercising.

He told Zoe Ball on her Radio 2 Breakfast Show, nothing could happen until he and Ruth can meet up again.

“We can’t write separately – we’re terrible at it because they’re part writing sessions and part therapy sessions.”

And when they do manage it, he’s unlikely to admit to it anyway. He said: “With the last one, that’s why we wrote it without telling anyone. We’d finished it before we called the

BBC because we just didn’t want to make anything that would in any way let everybody down.

“And so my hunch is no one will ever know if it’s coming until we’ve got it.”

Dad-of-three James, 42, who again voices Peter Rabbit in the movie sequel released on Monday, said they were letting the Gavin & Stacey ideas bank “fill up again”.

In the final scenes of the festive special, Nessa told Smithy: “I loves you, with all my heart.” And getting down on one knee she added: “So, will you marry me?”

But viewers were left not knowing whether a gobsmacked Smithy would accept or decline.
