Boris: I’d love to go on Bake Off

- By Patrick Daly

BORIS Johnson rose to the challenge yesterday showing off his skills in the kitchen and admitting he would “love” to appear on The Great British Bake Off.

The Prime Minister was visiting a youth centre in Manchester ahead of this week’s Tory Party Conference in the city.

In an activity-packed tour of the HideOut Youth Zone, Mr Johnson joined youngsters for a spot of cooking, even wearing an apron with “Bake Back Better” emblazoned on it.

The PM helped whisk together ingredients for a sponge cake, before icing one that had already been baked.

Asked whether he would like to be a contestant on Channel 4’s Bake Off, he replied: “I wish. I would love to do that. I don’t think they have ever invited me.”

Mr Johnson admitted it was “a long time” since he had helped with any household baking, and revealed his favourite treat is a Bakewell tart. “I think that’s just about my favourite,” the PM said, as he recalled how his grandmother used to bake them.

Asked later what his favourite dessert is, he replied: “I don’t know. I think I’m going to stick with the Bakewell tart.

“If I was on death row, I think I would have steak and chips followed by a Bakewell tart.”

But he later added: “Actually, it might be sticky toffee pudding. Yes, sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream.” The PM also played games of table tennis with children and staff at the centre, joined by Home Secretary Priti Patel.

He was heard describing one youngster, acting as his doubles partner, as “ruthless” after the boy slammed a shot past their opponents and into a bank of photographers.

Mr Johnson also showed off his artistic skills as he drew and coloured in a bee, before visiting the centre’s boxing gym.
