Queen gives up tipple to stay on top of work

- Russell Myers

THE Queen has made a “personal decision” to sacrifice her favourite tipples as one of the busiest periods of her reign approaches.

The 95-year-old monarch has already ditched her evening martini to keep her in good health in the upcoming months and years.

Contrary to reports, royal sources suggested it was “entirely the Queen’s decision” and not on the “orders of royal doctors”.

Her Majesty has several important engagements coming up, including the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, which starts on October 31 and ends on November 12.

And this week she was overheard criticising some world leaders for not committing to the event.

She is also heavily involved in the planning of the celebrations next year to mark her Platinum Jubilee – commemorating a record 70 years on the throne.

A royal source said: “It’s a big decision for the Queen [to quit drinking] but she has always prided herself on being very fit and well, and this is obviously in line with those values.”

Champagne

The monarch, who was widowed in April, has been renowned for having her daily drink of choice, a dry martini, which also happens to be Prince Charles’s favourite tipple, too. At dinner, the Queen usually enjoys a glass of sweet wine and, according to her late cousin Margaret Rhodes, she’s even been known in years gone by to have drunk a glass of champagne before bed.

Royal chef Darren McGrady, who served Her Majesty from 1982-1993, said she ate four small meals a day, including afternoon tea and a piece of cake, but she rarely drank at lunch and often enjoyed just a single small glass of sweet German wine with dinner.

The Queen has also been noted for being a fan of

Dubonnet and gin, which was the Queen Mother’s favourite drink. The Queen’s sister Margaret was renowned for being a heavy drinker. She died aged 71 in 2002.

Last year Buckingham Palace released its own brand of gin.The

Queen also allows sparkling wine to be produced from her vines atWindsor Great Park.
