‘Why would anyone want to kill such a kind man?’

- By Sarah O’Grady

AN 11-year-old girl from Sir David Amess’ constituency has encapsulated the grief and shock of millions of Britons.

Lola Hillgrove said: “Why did he have to die? I don’t know why anyone would want to kill someone who only wanted to do good and help people.

“All my friends at school are shocked and upset because Sir David came to see us and be with us several times.

“Sometimes he turned up to surprise us.

“He came to our art exhibition. He also came to help us plant trees for our environmental project.”

Lola, who goes to Saint Pierre School in Leigh-on-Sea, was particularly fond of Sir David as she was to be his constituency match in the upcoming Children’s Parliament initiative, which is still going ahead despite the tragedy. “I was in floods of tears on Friday,” said Lola, who lives in Westcliff-on-Sea. “He was such a kind man who tried to help everyone. It’s disgraceful and horrible. Sir David cared a lot about our Parliament and democracy and how people are the bosses of the MPs.”

Sir David’s long-time friend and parliamentary colleague David Davis MP has said he is stepping in to guarantee the This House Matters youth debate goes ahead, explaining: “Youngsters learning about democracy is a very important issue. David’s view would be that this attack is an assault on our democracy and we shouldn’t allow it to diminish our democracy.” ●●The Children’s Parliament is backed by UK company Wakelet and Microsoft365. It will be broadcast globally and on the Daily Express website at 5pm on Friday, October 29
