I killed my controlling and violent husband

- By John Twomey

A WIFE who stabbed her retired lieutenant colonel husband to death described him as a “pain in the a***” during an earlier call to police.

Penelope Jackson, 66, admits the manslaughter of David, 78, but denies murdering him.

She claims he was coercive and controlling and physically violent towards her.

Mrs Jackson knifed him three times in the kitchen of their bungalow in Berrow, Somerset, on February 13 this year.

A Bristol Crown Court jury heard she called police last December after her husband of 24 years picked up a poker and smashed a conservatory window before walking off.

Row

It was the day after he had an operation to have his pacemaker battery replaced and Penelope locked him in the conservatory to calm him down after they had a row about how to use the remote control.

In her 999 call she said: “I have just got bruises up my arms. He grabbed me and threatened me. It’s not like him. He’s just mad. I can’t explain.”

She said her husband held the poker and told her, “if you do not go away I will use it on you”. She then told the operator “he did not mean it”.

An officer told her the incident would be recorded as an assault.

Penelope said David’s behaviour was not so controlling that he would stop her seeing people. However, she added, “he is a pain in the a***”.

When the officer phoned her a few days later, she said David had turned down the voltage on his pacemaker battery after a call to the hospital, and was back to his normal self.

She said he had no recollection of what had happened.

The trial continues.
