Killing for religion shows a sick mind

-

ISLAMIST terrorism has raised its ugly head again, which prompts one big question in my mind. What is it about religion that drives people nuts? I know I may be castigated for my thoughts but I have never been a religious person. I have my own beliefs in my head but I am not guided by anyone, though I’m afraid too many are because we human beings are so easily led.

The people who suddenly get these ideas in their head that there is this imaginary friend, in whose name they are prepared to kill, are, in my opinion, just constructing something in their minds to protect themselves from the inevitability of death.

None of us wants to think the end is in fact the end, but this religious obsession with an afterlife – and the idea in some faiths that if you do horrendous things to non-believers you will be rewarded in that afterlife – is just complete rubbish.

I would say this about every religion. Those who are prepared to behave in these extreme ways have got it wrong.

Throughout history religious obsession has driven people to kill each other. Whether they are Muslim, Christian, Hindu or almost any other religion, some believers are convinced that it is acceptable to kill those who don’t share the same beliefs.

It must be an illness, or perhaps religious obsession just attracts people who are either just plain nasty or seriously unhinged.

It surely is time that religion was put back in its box. Anybody should be allowed to believe anything they want – that is perfectly acceptable.

But as for those religions that expect to be treated differently from everyone else – forget it. Perhaps the time has come for this mostly secular country we all have the pleasure of living in to separate church from state and to start by dissolving religion’s connection with the Royal Family?

French fishermen should just be thrown back

SO THE French fishermen think they’re going to block the English Channel in the row over licences?

When are these fishermen going to realise that they are not nearly as important as they think? One thing I do admire about the French, though, is that they don’t really obey any of the European dictatorship’s rules.

I love plaice but in this country fishermen throw back undersized fish because of EU rules. It doesn’t happen in France. You order plaice in France and you may get three small ones on your plate, which, according to the European directive on fishing, nobody should be catching.

French fishermen, and all the EU’s big trawler operators, think they have a right to do whatever they want. They don’t and hopefully, as we have now left that appalling organisation, they will be shown the error of their ways if they try to block anything.

They will be removed immediately and if they’re not the British people will be asking the British Government why it is not defending our waters.

AS SOMEONE who is continually being told by the Government and others that I am a vulnerable person, I would like to know why I haven’t been invited for my booster vaccine. I also want one for my beautiful new wife who is feeling slightly vulnerable. We are being told the vaccine is the way forward but the booster seems to be taking ages to materialise. We did really well at the beginning, so why is it now tailing off?

I HAVE just got back from my honeymoon after marrying an amazing lady who I used to refer to as Nanny and whose name is Nadine. She is a lady I met some time ago and fell in love with. I know lots of people probably think at our age – mine in particular and not being 100 per cent healthy – getting married was pretty pointless. But let me tell you, it’s not.

If you meet your soulmate, you will know and you will want to do anything you can to make them happy. I want to thank all those people who sent us good wishes and say to anybody who feels the same way about another human being: go for it.Age doesn’t matter. Nothing matters if you love someone.
