Time for action on migrants is overdue

-

THE number is phenomenal: 20,000. That’s right: 20,000. That is how many people have illegally crossed the Channel to enter this country so far this year. They come from France, which is not a bad country to live in, and yet still we don’t send people back. They are mostly young men. I’m sure some of them would be gratefully received and very useful to our economy, but 20,000 people coming into this country and many others disappearing – we simply cannot continue to allow this to happen. Politicians say there’s nothing they can do. Priti Patel comes up with ideas regularly, none of which have yet come to fruition. There are legal ways to come to this nation but just to break in is surely unacceptable.

The French are obviously not prepared to do a thing but, in a way, I don’t blame them. It is the whole of this European dictatorship that doesn’t seem to have any control. There is a huge problem on this planet caused by people not wanting to live where they are because of war, famine, work and many other problems, and yes, we should be doing something about it and the developed world could. But we’re not, we are turning a blind eye.

For goodness’ sake, politicians, wake up. These are human beings and we have to do something, but we cannot continue to allow so many people to come here and disappear. This has to have a global solution. Pretending it’s not happening is not an option any more.

YOU can call me a curmudgeonly old git

– I’ve been called worse – but here’s the thing: fireworks. I don’t mind an organised display as long as it’s done properly, but it seems to me that fireworks at this time of year are too much.

We’ve just had to put up with Bonfire Night, commemorating a not very nice man, and now we’ve got Diwali and any other reason people can think of to let these things off.

In between, everybody is going on about mental illness and how we have to be careful of what we do to upset people. Let’s think about our four-legged friends of all types. This letting off of explosive material for fun is just a nuisance.

I don’t know why we allow it, but at this time of the year, and in some places all year, you can buy explosive material. Some can be extremely dangerous and unfortunately there are some mentally challenged people out there who still think it’s funny to throw them at people or even tie them to animals’ tails.

I would make the latter a capital offence. So why don’t we have a referendum about banning them except for organised displays? I think a lot of people would agree that they are a nuisance beyond belief.
