History: Villages By The Sea, BBC2, 7pm
Archaeologist Ben Robinson (left) reveals how some of the nation’s best-loved villages played a vital part in significant moments of history. He begins in Bamburgh, Northumberland, explaining how the health and fortunes of the village were shaped by those in charge of its famous castle, from early English kings to 18thcentury philanthropists, who pioneered a welfare system nearly 200 years before one existed nationally. Ben visits fellow archaeologist Jessica Turner, whose findings show the 7th-century residents of Bamburgh were robust and healthy – contrary to the usual malnourishment of the British medieval population.
Antiques: Fake Or Fortune?, BBC4, 8pm
Fiona Bruce and Philip Mould (both above) investigate more potentially valuable works of art, helping a man who believes he owns a painting by French postimpressionist Édouard Vuillard. The quest for provenance begins in Geneva, where Philip compares the picture with a Vuillard work from 1919, trying to find out whether the same materials were used, while Fiona uncovers clues to the picture’s origins.
