The world’s first gold one-eighth sovereign in tribute to all those who served Britain during the Second World War.

-

On Remembrance Day each year we pay respect to those who have fought to defend this country. Each passing year becomes more significant as the number of men and women who saw service in the Second World War on land, at sea and in the air and who are still with us become ever fewer. Sadly, most are no longer with us.

Now, a new gold one-eighth sovereign coin has been struck, the first of its kind ever to celebrate the everyday ranks of our armed forces that fought in the Second World War.

A TRIBUTE TO ALL WHO SERVED IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR

Coins commemorating the Second World War have, in the past, often focused on the heroic deeds of an individual, such as the recipient of a Victoria Cross.

However, the defence of this nation was made possible by the millions of service men and women, many of them of ordinary rank, each of whom played their part with courage and resolve. Just about every family includes someone who ‘did their bit’ for the nation. However, their stories of the war years will soon be lost to time. So, how do we ensure these experiences are anchored for the younger generations, for whom the Second World War is now in distant history? A permanent reminder of the courage and endurance of this wartime generation has now been made in solid 22 carat gold.

DESIGN BASED ON THE MEDAL AWARDED TO ALL WHO SERVED

The design is inspired by the 193945 War Medal (shown below) which was awarded to all who fought in the Second World War. The motif of a lion trampling an eagle is simple and yet clear. It is the first time this motif has appeared on a gold sovereign coin, giving it collector-appeal.

PURCHASES OF THIS COIN WILL SUPPORT SSAFA, THE ARMED FORCES CHARITY

Every purchase of these new gold coins will support the Soldiers’, Sailors’, Airmen’s and Families Association - known as SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity - who provide lifelong support for our Forces and their families. Ten percent (10%) of all net profits on sales of these gold coins will be paid in support of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, ensuring that this tribute to our past service personnel will also help look after our current service men and women.

FEWER THAN 1 IN 4,000 UK HOUSEHOLDS CAN OWN ONE

This new coin is an important world-first in paying tribute to those who defended this country. It is likely to be in considerable demand - however, many who want this coin will potentially miss out as its release is subject to a strict limit which is fixed and cannot be changed, regardless of whether or not it is oversubscribed. Authorised by Tristan da Cunha and approved by both the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Buckingham Palace, the release is restricted to a maximum of just 5,999 coins. This means fewer than 1 in every four-thousand UK households can own one.

HOW TO SECURE ONE FOR YOURSELF

Those interested in owning one of these world-first gold coins may do so now by taking advantage of the introductory price being offered by Hattons of London. The coin is available for just £69 (plus £4.99 P&P) but only until 31st December 2021 after which the price will be £99.
