Politics should be a calling, not a career

-

O THE SLEAZE box is open again and poor old Boris doesn’t really seem to know which way is forward. But the alternative doesn’t exactly fill me with any confidence either. Why didn’t we clone Maggie? There is, of course, a very easy answer to these problems. First, no MP should be allowed to do more than two terms if they get elected. Politics should be a calling, rather than a career. Second, no politician should be able to carry on with another job. If they’re only going to do two terms then surely their career can be left open to them. Given the recent revelations about the time some politicians spend on their second jobs, they can’t have been doing much for their constituents.

Oh, and the Labour MP who was recently convicted of threatening to throw acid in someone’s face should have been sacked immediately. If a politician breaks the law in any way the sentence should be twice as long. After all, being a politician is giving public service.

And while I’m on the subject, political advisors, who now seem to be around 10-years-old, should be sacked. MPs need to be advised by people who have had some life experience.

WHAT IS IT about fame that makes us go mad for it? Many people seem to want it just for the sake of it. Politicians fight to get into the media and some reality “stars” seem addicted to publicity.

But let me warn you, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. The first time I was ever recognised was at King’s Cross station in London. I heard a voice calling out, “Whaley!” very loudly. I turned round and the bloke in an anorak shouted out: “You are a **** (very rude word).”

Be careful what you wish for.

MANY years ago, when I first got kidney cancer, I started a charity called Kidney Cancer UK. It was at the time very rare, but that, sadly, is now not the case. Like all charities it is struggling to raise money, all of which, by the way, is spent – unlike some of these enormous charities that have millions of pounds in their bank accounts.

I’m thinking about what I can do next to raise awareness and money, so I’m doing a wing walk.Actually, it’s not exactly a walk – I get strapped to the top of a plane and flown around. Has anyone else got any other ideas? I think I should take a photographer with me – strange how the people I ask keep saying no.
