They don’t come any sweeper for Broom

BEAUTY PUTS PILGRIMS TOP

- By Lindsay Sutton

RYAN BROOM’S sensational strike saw Plymouth go top of the table and the proud Pilgrim said: “The gaffer told me that TWO goalkeepers couldn’t have kept it out.”

Broom’s 25-yard belter screamed past Accrington keeper Toby Savin to put the game beyond Stanley, who were attempting a fight-back.

It left Broom admitting: “It’s the best goal in all my career – the perfect strike and in front of our travelling fans. I tried hard to hit it just right, as well as I could. It was a great time to score, because Accrington were battling back after pulling a goal back.

“We knew they would in the second half after going two down, but we stuck to our game plan.

We kept our cool and our shape. So my goal came at the perfect time, and then we got another to finish off the job.”

He added: “To get to the top of the table is one thing, to stay there has to be our aim. It was a brilliant result, especially at a place likeAccrington. We won’t get carried away.We play good, exciting football and we can get better still, but we don’t want to get above our station.”

Boss Ryan Lowe said: “This was our best away performance, and now we want to bounce out of this to play Sheffield Wednesday in tomorrow’s FA Cup replay. We want to be in the cup, and we are going in confidently.

“There was a bubbly atmosphere on the coach travelling to Accrington, and now we want to take that bubbly atmosphere home.” Accrington were hit by an own goal by Ethan Hamilton, who was trying to cut out a cross to Joe Edwards. Just as tough was Plymouth’s second strike a minute before the break – courtesy of Jordan Houghton, but made by Broom. Stanley pulled one back through Tommy Leigh. Then came Broom’s brush with glory as the on-loan midfielder scored his cracker, from a lay-off by Jordon Garrick. Broom then helped Ryan Hardie get back on the goal trail, with his 11th strike of the season.

Accy boss John Coleman admitted: “We have to defend better, but we have to be more clinical too. We matched them in every department except putting the ball away.We had 18 shots on goal to their nine.”
