Emission impossible for Britain

-

PTHE public has always been miles ahead of MPs on virtually every issue. For years polls showed that huge numbers of people wanted to leave the EU and yet there were hardly any MPs who would argue for it.

I am pretty sure the same is now true of climate change and getting the country to net zero.

The UK has cut its carbon emissions by almost half over the last 30 years. We are now responsible for less than 1 per cent of global carbon emissions. We were told that if we were to take this action, other countries around the world would follow us. I am afraid that all the evidence shows that they are not following us, they are laughing at us – taking the high energy using businesses from the UK and the jobs that go with them.

Even if we were to get to net zero it would make no difference at all to global temperatures – particularly when countries such as China, India and emerging economies in Africa are going to be increasing their carbon emissions each year by more than our entire total.

Such action would be utterly futile, virtue signalling, gesture politics which would also bankrupt the country along with many families.

The estimated cost of getting from less than one per cent of global carbon emissions to net zero is estimated to be £1.4trillion in the UK – that is money the country and many of my constituents can ill

afford; especially when the actions of other countries will make it utterly futile.

Many people are struggling with the cost of living – something that will get more acute over the next year or so.They would like to see us sourcing the cheapest energy, not the greenest energy.

It is always striking how coy the eco-extremists are about admitting what the total cost of getting to net zero will be and who will be paying for it.

It would be much more sensible

to spend money on adapting to changes in the climate rather than an unrealistic view that every country in the world is going to come together to change the world’s climate. That is simply not going to happen. I am afraid that anyone who thinks every country in the world is going to take these measures are in cloud-cuckoo land.

I’m pretty sure the silent majority know that. It is just politicians who have – like with Brexit – collectively lost the plot, and have once again misjudged the mood of the country.
