50 more fines over Partygate ...but not for Boris and Carrie

- By John Twomey

SCOTLAND Yard has issued more than 50 new fines for breaches of lockdown rules at Downing Street and other government offices.

The latest Partygate offenders have not been named but this time the list does not include Boris Johnson, his wife Carrie or Cabinet Secretary Simon Case.

The Met has now issued more than 100 fixed penalty notices as part of its probe into government lockdown-busting booze-ups.

Mr and Mrs Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak were last month fined over a birthday party for the PM at No10 in June 2020.

Mr Johnson is alleged to have been at six of the 12 events being probed by police and could be fined again. The Met said yesterday: “The investigation remains live” meaning more fines are likely.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and colleagues are also now under investigation for allegedly breaching Covid-19 rules in April 2021.

Sir Keir has said he will resign if issued with a fixed penalty notice. Mr Johnson has apologised for the breach which led to his fine.

In addition to the Met’s probe and an investigation by senior civil servant Sue Gray, he is facing an inquiry by the Privileges Committee into whether he misled MPs with repeated assurances Covid rules were followed in No10.

Asked if he would resign in an LBC interview broadcast yesterday, the PM said: “What matters to me is getting our people through the aftershocks of Covid and coming out strongly the other side.”

But deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner said: “Boris Johnson made the rules and then broke them at record-breaking scale. Britain deserves better.”
