Vardy branded rival Rooney ‘a pigeon’ in war of the Wags

- By John Twomey

REBEKAH Vardy likened Coleen Rooney to a pigeon that will “**** in your hair”, a libel trial heard yesterday.

Her remarks, made in a 2019 newspaper interview, were read out at the High Court during a tense cross-examination which twice left MrsVardy in tears.

Asked by a journalist if she ever argued with Mrs Rooney, she had replied: “That would be like arguing with a pigeon.

“You can tell it that you are right and it is wrong, but it’s still going to **** in your hair.”

Sitting a few feet away, Mrs Rooney listened intently as her lawyer David Sherborne read extracts from the interview.

Leaking

Mrs Vardy, 40, started crying as she was quizzed over allegedly leaking a fake story posted by Mrs Rooney, who had pretended her £20million home had been damaged by a flood, it was said.

She put the details on her Instagram account, the court heard.

The ruse was part of her plan to root out who had been leaking stories about her to a newspaper, it was alleged.

Yesterday, Mrs Vardy denied ever seeing Mrs Rooney’s flooding Instagram post.

She became upset after her rival’s lawyer reminded her she had admitted seeing it in a statement she made two years ago.

Her voice breaking with emotion, Mrs Vardy said: “There was a lot of abuse at the time.”

The wife of Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy had burst into tears on Wednesday when she was questioned about vile abuse aimed at her and her children. Mrs Vardy had launched the libel action after Mrs Rooney, wife of former England star Wayne, accused her of leaking stories about her to a newspaper.

It became known as the “Wagatha Christie” case after Mrs Rooney, 36, turned detective to track down the alleged leaker.

Mrs Vardy was also accused of plotting with a photographer to take pictures of her and other Wags during the 2018World Cup in Russia.

She admitted agreeing with a cameraman to take her photograph as she left a hotel but denied revealing which restaurant she and other Wags planned to visit.

A picture was later taken of her with fellow Wags Millie Savage, Gemma Acton, Megan Davison, Annabel Peyton, Fern Hawkins, Shannon Horlock, Annie Kilner and Lucia Loi outside the restaurant.

Ms Hawkins, partner of Harry Maguire, was embarrassed and “had not expected to be put in that position by Mrs Vardy”, the court heard.

Mrs Rooney is defending the libel claim brought by Mrs Vardy on the basis of truth and public interest.

The trial continues.
