Kante facing long spell out after op

- MATTHEW DUNN

N’GOLO KANTE has gone under the knife in a bid to solve his hamstring problems and will be out until February.

It means he is almost certain to be in a position to leave Chelsea for nothing when his current deal expires in 2023.

Any hopes of the London club cashing in on the 31-year-old in January seem to be dashed after it was decided rehabilitation alone was not working.

A club statement said: “N’Golo Kante has undergone an operation on his hamstring injury.

“The midfielder visited a specialist with the club’s medical department to explore the options for his rehabilitation approach and it was mutually agreed for N’Golo to have surgery to repair the damage.”

It seems that the France star will be sidelined during January’s transfer window and will be able to weigh up his options in the summer, having attracted interest from BRENTFORD V CHELSEA 7.30PM Juventus and Tottenham.

Chelsea will struggle to plug the hole – although manager Graham Potter, below, does at least believe he has discovered that special something that makes Mason Mount so special to managers: Love.

When asked why Chelsea’s win percentage jumps when Mount is in the side, Potter said: “I would say love for the game, love for his team-mates, love for the club. He loves to play football. You can’t measure that.”

Chelsea make a short trip tonight to Brentford, whose head coach Thomas Frank has branded the racist abuse suffered by Ivan Toney after scoring twice against Brighton on Friday “a disgrace”.

Frank said: “All online abusers are a disgrace in every aspect.

“We have to keep educating people to what kind of world we are living in.”
