I am a fighter not a quitter, says Truss

- By Martyn Brown

DEFIANT Liz Truss has told MPs she will battle on to prolong her stay in No 10.

The Prime Minister hit back at Sir Keir Starmer when he said she has no mandate from the country to rule and sent the economy crashing.

During a brutal Prime Minister’s Questions – the first since Ms Truss was forced to ditch her mini-Budget – the Labour leader joked that she will be “out by Christmas” because of her doomed economic “fantasy”.

Mistakes

But Ms Truss said she would not resign, and insisted: “I am a fighter, not a quitter”, echoing a famous line from Labour’s Peter Mandelson in 2001.

And she shut down talk that the pension triple lock would be ditched to save money.

She added: “I have acted in the national interest to make sure that we have economic stability.”

The clashes came with Ms Truss clinging to power after a tumultuous six weeks in power.

The PM apologised for the “mistakes” she had made, telling MPs: “I have been very clear that I am sorry and that I have made mistakes.”

To shouts of “resign” from the opposition benches, she added: “The right thing to do in those circumstances is to make changes, which I have made, and to get on with the job and deliver for the British people.”

But Sir Keir said the Conservatives’ economic credibility was “gone” after her plans had ended in “disaster”.

He said: “Working people are going to have £500 more a month on their mortgages and what’s the Prime Minister’s response? To say she’s sorry.

“What does she think? People will think and say ‘That’s all right, I don’t mind financial ruin, at least she apologised’ ”

Ms Truss hit back: “I do think there has to be some reflection of economic reality from the party opposite. The fact is that interest rates are rising across the world and the economic conditions have worsened.”
