Baseball bat raid over family will feud

- By Kenny Parker

A FEUDING daughter took her teenage son on a revenge attack against her own mother, claiming she was cut out of a will.

Zoe Newby and ex-Army cadet Liam Dunphy were among four people who went to Diane Haywood’s home with a baseball bat and iron bar, a court heard.

The group broke a living window then Newby, 40, put her head through and screamed at the supermarket assistant and her husband Douglas: “You have made me into this! You have got enough money, you can repair it all!”

Mr Haywood, 64, suffered a head injury as he tried to stop two masked attackers from entering and his wife was “terrified”.

Screaming

Mother-of-four Newby admitted affray and Dunphy, 19, pleaded guilty to assault and criminal damage. Both were jailed for a year, suspended for 18 months.

Constance Halliwell, prosecuting, had told Bolton Crown Court: “The family had fallen out a few years before. There was a dispute over money, following the death of Diane Haywood’s brother.

“Ms Newby was in the garden...shouting and screaming. Mr Haywood said two males stood at the door, with scarves covering their faces.” They hit him and the Haywoods fled to the kitchen.

Miss Halliwell said when a neighbour arrived and asked them to leave one man said his mother was inside. Blood on a glove in the street was linked to Dunphy.

Newby, from Top O’th Brow, Bolton, was also ordered to complete 30 days of rehabilitation activity and a nine-month alcohol treatment programme. Dunphy, a decorator, must do 120 hours of unpaid work and 25 days of rehabilitation.

Both were banned from contacting the Haywoods for three years.

Judge Martin Walsh told them: “There had been a family dispute over money which had simmered away for some time and during the incident itself there were four people attending the address.

“Damage was caused to the windows of the house, and Mr Haywood was struck to the head as he opened the door.

“Ms Newby, you encouraged what was going on at the time. This was a terrifying incident for Mr and Mrs Haywood.”

The court heard Newby was jailed for 16 weeks in 2017 and sacked from her carer job after stealing £500 from a client with dementia.
