SON FACES RACE TO REACH QATAR

- By John Cross

HEUNG-MIN SON needs surgery to repair a fractured eye socket and is a major doubt for the World Cup.

Tottenham striker Son suffered the damage to his left eye during their Champions League win in Marseille on Tuesday.

The South Korea star, below, will face a race against time after the operation to “stabilise” the injury, with the tournament in Qatar starting in less than three weeks.

However, Spurs are not putting a time scale on his recovery and stress it will depend on rehabilitation.

A club statement said: “We can confirm that Heung-Min Son will undergo surgery to stabilise a fracture around his left eye.

“Following surgery, Son will commence rehabilitation with our medical staff and we shall update supporters further in due course.”

Son suffered severe swelling after being caught by an elbow and the injury leaves Tottenham short on forwards ahead of Sunday’s clash with Liverpool, with Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski also injured.

Spurs striker Harry Kane will not allow himself to ease up to ensure he stays fit for the World Cup, though.

After facing Liverpool, Tottenham take on Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup and Leeds in the Premier League prior to the World Cup.

England captain Kane said: “I said the World Cup was going to come round really quickly. A lot of players have it in the back of their minds but the top, top players manage to give 110 percent no matter what.

“The more you try to think about managing yourself, it sometimes backfires.

“Of course it’s hard not to think about it but if we can have three good results it will put us in a really good place going into the World Cup.”
