FEELING LOWE

Lamps out as big changes end with Toffees crushed

- By Alex Crook

FRANK LAMPARD’S decision to make 11 changes backfired as the terrible Toffees were subjected to a cup battering.

Junior Stanislas’s first goal in 20 months helped Bournemouth end a four-match winless run in what is likely to be Gary O’Neil’s penultimate game in charge.

Jamal Lowe, Emiliano Marcondes and Jaidon Anthony were also on target as the hosts took full advantage of a defensive horror show from Lampard’s men in this Carabao Cup tie.

Lowe had already flicked an effort into the side-netting when he opened the scoring with just seven minutes played. His shot took a massive deflection off the luckless James Garner, sending the ball looping in over the stranded Asmir Begovic. Everton initially reacted well, and Tom Davies wasted a golden chance just four minutes later as he blasted over when one-on-one with Mark Travers. The goalkeeper then made an acrobatic save to tip Garner’s 22-yard strike over for a corner. Anthony Gordon could have been sent off a minute before half-time for a poor challenge on Jordan Zemura but escaped with only a yellow card.

Bournemouth cashed in on a mistake by Mason Holgate to double their lead two minutes into the second half.

Holgate was dispossessed by Ryan Christie after slipping on the edge of the penalty area and Christie teed up Lowe to roll the ball across the six-yard box for Stanislas, left, to tap in. Everton could easily have been 3-0 down as former Cherries goalkeeper Begovic made a good save at his near post to keep out Anthony’s shot.

Lowe should have had his second goal of the game after being picked out at the far post by Zemura’s teasing cross but could only head over.

Substitute Demarai Gray gave Everton a lifeline in the 67th minute by curling beyond the diving Travers and into the top left corner from just inside the penalty area to make it 2-1.

Bournemouth had thrown away two-goal leads in each of their past two league defeats but fears of an unwanted hattrick were eased when Marcondes struck from close range 12 minutes from time.

Anthony slotted in from 12 yards four minutes later after Siriki Dembele caught Nathan Patterson dallying on the ball.
