Pope keeps Howe on trophy trail

- SIMON BIRD

HERO Nick Pope made a hat-trick of shootout saves as Eddie Howe’s Newcastle grasped their Carabao Cup chance.

The England keeper made three sensational diving stops to dump Palace out and elevate Newcastle to one of the favourites for cup glory.

Newcastle had won just one penalty shootout in their past 10, but Pope was brilliant to rescue NEWCASTLE WIN 3-2 ON PENS them after a drab goalless draw.

Chris Wood, Kieran Trippier and Joelinton all scored for Newcastle.

Pope pulled off a brilliant save to stop Luka Milivojevic, who missed Palace’s first kick, before keeping out Jean-Philippe Mateta’s kick and finally Malcolm Ebiowei for the match-winning moment.

Sam Johnstone got a palm to Sven Botman’s effort to keep it out and Brazil international Bruno Guimarães almost blew it for the Toon by sending their fourth kick over the bar after messing around with his run up.Will Hughes and Joel Ward were Palace’s only scorers.

Howe was targeting this cup chance in his bid to end a trophy drought dating back to 1969.This was a huge chance to progress and have a cup run with Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal all heading out at the third round stage.
