Someone will die...Britain’s most dangerous crossing
PEDESTRIANS and cyclists are risking their lives every time they use a zebra crossing branded “the most dangerous in Britain”.
Heart-stopping videos show drivers failing to stop and ploughing into people at the designated crossing in Bradford.
The series of accidents were highlighted by TV presenter and bike safety campaigner Jeremy Vine on social media.
Shopkeeper Mohammad Haleem, 45, who recorded the footage on a security camera, said: “Someone is going to die.”
Mr Haleem has taken a petition to Bradford Council, but claims nothing has been done – even though there are schools nearby.
The father of five added: “Someone is going to have to be killed before they do anything. We have had so many accidents here, but councillors are sleeping on the job. Does some kid have to die before anything is done about the problem?
“We want a pelican crossing installed in place of the zebra crossing. This is a busy road and drivers need to see a red light. They should stop at a red light.”
Shocking footage from last week showed a boy cycling slowly across, avoiding one car which failed to stop, only to be struck by a second.
The video has been viewed more than 70,000 times, while a number of other clips show people being hit at the crossing with Horton Grange Road. The crossing, where drivers by law have to stop, is on a 30mph street and just 100 yards from a speed camera.
Worried residents have pleaded with the council to tear down the warning beacons and replace them with traffic lights.
A Bradford Council spokesman said: “We understand the local concerns about this crossing and we will carry out an immediate inspection.”
