Science: Secrets of Size: Atoms to Supergalax­ies, BBC4, 9pm

Mind-bending cosmology series, hosted by one of the UK’s foremost theoretica­l physicists Jim Al-Khalili (left) exploring the vast range of size in the universe – from tiny atoms to gigantic interconne­cted galaxies. Tonight, Jim investigat­es the largest known cosmic structures, including a vast cloud of solar plasma which surrounds and protects the solar system and the black hole of the Milky Way, which emits the lowest note ever heard in the cosmos.

Film: The Death Of Stalin, BBC2, 11.45pm

When tyrannical dictator Joseph Stalin suddenly dies in 1953, his parasitic cronies square off in a frantic power struggle to become the next Soviet leader. Among the contenders are geeky Georgy Malenkov, wily Nikita Khrushchev and Lavrenti Beria – the much-feared, sadistic secret police chief. Historical satire starring Jason Issacs (above), Steve Buscemi, Paddy Considine and Simon Russell Beale.

Food: MasterChef, BBC1, 8pm

Tonight marks the penultimat­e episode of the gruelling annual cookery competitio­n, hosted by Jon Torode and Gregg Wallace. As we approach the finishing line for this year’s event, the remaining aspiring chefs are being put through their paces for the next to the last time by celebrated chef Clare Smyth (left) – who cut her teeth with industry pioneers Gordon Ramsay and Alain Ducasse – at her central London restaurant, Core, which currently holds a three Michelin star rating. They are each tasked with cooking one of Clare’s signature food creations at a special lunch for a select group of chefs including past MasterChef winner Sat Bains and Tom Kitchin.

Lifestyle: The Great British Sewing Bee, BBC1, 9pm

The 12 sewers who are tasked with making a travel wardrobe, starting with a good sturdy rucksack. As part of the transforma­tion challenge they head to the seaside to sculpt windbreake­rs into emergency rainwear and create made-to-measure swimsuits, before facing the scrutiny of Sewing Bee host Sara Pascoe, and judges Patrick Grant and Esme Young (above right, with Sara left).

Arts: Discoverin­g: Rita Hayworth, SkyArts, 9pm

A fascinatin­g look at the life and career of Hollywood icon Rita Hayworth (right) – the American actress best known for her pulsating charisma in films throughout the 1930s and 1940s. From her humble origins as the daughter of dancers in Brooklyn, New York, to her tumultuous love life which included marriages to director and writer Orson Welles and Pakistani-Iranian diplomat Prince Aly Khan. The film features archive footage and interviews with industry experts.
