Cleverly in plea on people movement

- By Michael Knowles

JAMES Cleverly will urge leaders to approach illegal migration with the same resolve as they have shown on climate change.

The Home Secretary, on a two-day trip to the United States, will claim the key to “solving the international migration challenge” is to “help people to stay and thrive at home”.

The Home Office said Mr Cleverly will today encourage the focus to be placed on the “root causes” of the surge in migration.

He will say: “I’m calling for a big, open, global conversation about what more we need to do together and what needs to change.

“The UK will show the same leadership as we have with climate change, conflict prevention, and Artificial Intelligence. Success is dependent on a holistic, whole-of-route approach.

“While remaining welcoming, we must also urgently consider the impact this level of migration has not just had on those countries where migrants seek to settle, or through which they transit, but also on the countries they leave behind. We need to do more, together.”

Mr Cleverly will urge “collective action” to “smash the peoplesmuggling gangs, address the drivers of forced displacement, help people to thrive in their own countries and encourage countries to invest in development”.

He added: “We need to support countries who wish to settle more refugees, tackle irregular migration, consider how we need to update the international architecture around these issues, increase international trade, and find, together, the right balance of economic and cultural growth.”

Mr Cleverly, whose west coast visit will see him meet leading tech companies, had talks yesterday in San Francisco with Clint Smith, chief legal officer of social media platform Discord, with them discussing online safety and AI technologies.
