Labour’s plan to ‘keep Rishi in place’

- By Martyn Brown Deputy Political Editor

LABOUR want to keep Rishi Sunak in place as Prime Minister – as they think he will be easier to defeat at the next general election, it has been claimed.

With rumours swirling of a plot to oust the PM, opposition figures have been accused of “doing all they can” to make sure he remains in the job.

They have even borrowed a phrase from the Boris Johnson playbook of political warfare to make sure their plan succeeds.

During the Partygate row in 2022, Mr Johnson attempted to salvage his premiership with a plan he reportedly dubbed, “Operation Save Big Dog”.

Now, Labour have launched “Operation Save S*** Dog”, which aims to attack any potential candidate to replace Mr Sunak, such as Kemi Badenoch or Penny Mordaunt.

It has sparked concern amongTories who think the PM should be removed before the election to give the party a better chance of winning.

A source told the Daily Express: “There is a lot of concern that Labour’s new plan, ‘Operation Save S*** Dog, has been swinging into action over the past few weeks.

Alternatives

“They seem to be dusting up any Cabinet alternatives to the PM as soon as they emerge.

“A few weeks ago, Sir Keir Starmer did an entire PMQs going after Kemi Badenoch.

“It’s ‘keep the man in place and keep shutting down all the alternatives’.

“They are playing whack a mole with emerging members of the Cabinet.”

The same will happen for Ms Mordaunt and Grant Shapps, it was said.

It comes amid claims MPs on the right of theTory Party have held talks with moderates about uniting behind Ms Mordaunt to replace Mr Sunak.

Discussions have apparently been held about the possibility of backing Ms Mordaunt if the PM faces a confidence vote in the coming weeks.

Ms Mordaunt was praised when, as Lord President of the Council, she held aloft the Sword of State and walked ahead of King Charles III during his coronation ceremony in Westminster Abbey on May 6, 2023.

She received plaudits from commentators and TV viewers thanks to her starring role.
