It’s hard for us now to comprehend the fear that a photograph of a hand could unleash. In 1895, Wilhelm Roentgen took an X-ray photograph of his wife’s hand. Scientists and doctors saw what enormous advances could be made, but many people found the idea of a camera that could see beneath the skin the stuff of nightmares.
