The Great British Bake Off

8PM, BBC1 Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins welcome this year’s batch of 12 nervous amateur bakers into the famous tent, pitched in the heart of the glorious Berkshire countrysid­e. Judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry (right) have come up with 30 new challenges designed to test the bakers’ technical skill and creativity – as ever, each episode will culminate in one being crowned Star Baker, and one being sent home. And straight after follow last year’s winner Nadiya Hussain as she returns to her roots in Bangladesh on a colourful culinary odyssey.

Can Britain Have A Pay Rise?

8PM, BBC2 Shockingly, nearly half the British workforce earns less than £20,000 a year, and one in five working adults is officially classed as low-paid. Here, James O’Brien and Stephanie McGovern host a studio debate to discuss whether we deserve to be paid more, and whether Brexit will lead to pay packets being fatter – or thinner.

Great Canal Journeys

8PM, CH4 This week, Timothy West and Prunella Scales explore the waterways of the Netherland­s. Travelling west to east via canal, lake and sea, they follow the route of the mariners from the Dutch golden age, enjoying the vistas and hearing how a combinatio­n of canals, dykes and windmills prevent the country from flooding.

9PM, CH4 This powerful one-off drama stars Stephen Graham as Carl, a CCTV operator and father of two, who spends his days alone, watching the world go by on a series of screens. But one night, Carl decides to take on a gang of local drug dealers the police are ignoring, unleashing a terrifying chain of events that will change his life for ever.
