IN HIS OWN WORDS: Adrian Edmondson
Taking another straight role in dark drama One Of Us (9pm, BBC1), the former star of the anarchic comedy The Young Ones has reinvented himself over the years…
On his childhood in Bradford:
‘There was a bit of disused land behind our house, full of craters, which kept my friends and I happy for hours and hours. We had a lot more freedom than the kids do these days; there was no fear and nothing much on television.’
On playing in his folk punk band, The Bad Shepherds:
‘I don’t know anyone in the world who doesn’t want to be a rock ’n’ roll star. I dreamt about it all through my school days.’
On his cooking since winning Celebrity MasterChef in 2013:
’It’s been a revelation to me. I enjoyed cooking, but I really enjoy it now. It feels more like an art form now.’
On how show business has changed:
‘I really miss the working lunch. I miss the days in the 1980s, when a theatrical producer would take you out for lunch, and you wouldn’t get home until 5am. Now, it’s all smoothies.’
On why he doesn’t consider himself a comedian:
‘I mean, I know I did The Young Ones and Bottom and various other outings, but… I never felt like a comedian. I never stood up and cracked gags. I’ve always been part of a double act or a fiction.’
On his partnership with Rik Mayall, who died in 2014:
‘I have never laughed as hard as I have writing with Rik… Apoplectic laughter.’
