MATTHEW JUKES’ WINE LIST
Six world-famous wineries this week – and each one has conjured an unmissable treat
1 2013 Wirra Wirra, Church Block, McLaren Vale, South Australia
£11, reduced to £9 until 13 September, Booths One of my all-time favourite red wines, Church Block is irresistible at this price. Buy as much as you can because it tastes great now and will also mature very well.
2 2011 Beronia, Reserva, Rioja, Spain
£13.49, Waitrose Award-winning, swaggering and stuffed with fruit flavours, this is a very impressive Rioja loaded with vanilla-kissed oak and structure. At five years old it’s drinking beautifully, especially with the Hairy Bikers’ Piri Piri Chicken.
3 2015 The Society’s Exhibition Côte de Brouilly, Beaujolais, France
£8.95, thewine society.com The silky, cherry-imbued fruit plus the length and complexity of the flavour make this a massive bargain. Drink it slightly chilled with the Piri Piri Chicken or the Chicken Burgers.
4 2014 Willson Family, Langhorne Creek Cabernet Sauvignon, South Australia
£13.50, M&S Winemaker Bec Willson, whose family owns the Bremerton winery, has used her skills to make a fantastic cabernet for M&S. It has a huge, allpervasive blackcurrant theme and epic tannins.
5 2015 Rustenberg, Straw Wine, Coastal Region, South Africa
£11.99, half bottle, reduced to £9.99 each on a ‘mix six’ deal until 24 October, Majestic Made from chenin blanc and viognier grapes that are dried on straw mats for a few weeks, this sweetie is scented with pineapple and honey.
