A sixth of London’s citizens were made homeless; the majority of them had to live in makeshift camps through the bitter winter of 1666-67. In this programme, we hear how Artichoke, a company that specialises in staging amazing events, will be marking the conflagration.

BBC Proms 2016
7.30PM, RADIO 3 Brahms wrote his Symphony No 2 while staying at an Austrian lakeside resort. The setting was idyllic and the music, which came easy to Brahms, reflects the composer’s surroundings. There are, however, some melancholic passages in the symphony, and Brahms remarked – perhaps as a joke – that musicians should play the piece as if ‘with a mourning ribbon around their arm’. Here, Simon Rattle conducts the Berlin Philharmonic through the work.
