The Waterside Ape 9AM, RADIO 4

In 1960, the marine biologist Alister Hardy put forward the theory that our human ancestors had evolved at the water’s edge. His theory was taken up with enthusiasm by the writer Elaine Morgan, but the Hardy-Morgan hypothesis was derided by palaeoanthropologists. In this twopart series, David Attenborough looks at this much-mocked theory, and hears of new evidence that seems to support it.

The 56 2.15PM, RADIO 4

This drama takes statements from some of the survivors of the Bradford City stadium fire of 1985, which left 56 people dead. We hear harrowing details of the day, and discover how the tragedy has affected so many lives.

Jo Whiley 8PM, RADIO 2

The French singer Heloise Letissier joins Jo for a live session. Heloise, who performs with her band under their stage name of Christine and The Queens, will be performing tracks from the album Chaleur Humaine. The Pin 11PM, RADIO 4

This increasingly confident and funny sketch show from Alex Owen and Ben Ashenden hits its stride in the second edition of the new series. There are lots of good gags, plus a clever sketch about a policeman trying to get a murder witness statement – from Oscar Wilde.

Bird Island 11.15PM, RADIO 4

It’s good to see Radio 4 returning to its policy of broadcasting offbeat comedy in this late-night spot. This repeated series, starring Reece Shearsmith, Julian Rhind-Tutt and Alison Steadman, is set in the sub-Antarctic. There, a young scientist studying the albatross tries to keep up his spirits, despite the climate, the darkness and the behaviour of his companions.
