SATURDAY
The Wicker Man (1973) 15 9PM, HORROR Lawman Edward Woodward investigates the disappearance of a girl on a remote island in Anthony Shaffer’s pagan horror. Christopher Lee is the laird leading him up the garden path. (Freeview 70, Freesat 138, Sky 319, Virgin 149) Knight And Day (2010) 12 10PM, CH4 Tom Cruise plays Roy – part James Bond, part stalker – in this comedy actioner. Latching on to unsuspecting June (Cameron Diaz, below, with Cruise), he whisks her away on a series of madcap adventures. It’s formulaic stuff, but thrives on the chemistry of the two leads.
Beowulf
(2007) 12 11.20PM, ITV Writer Neil Gaiman and Quentin Tarantino collaborator Roger Avary each brings his own spin to this motion-capture reworking of the Old English poem. Digitalised Ray Winstone is the brave warrior in this suitably gory version. Telstar: The Joe Meek Story (2008) 15 11.30PM, BBC2 Hit-maker Joe Meek may have been tone-deaf, but that didn’t stop him creating one of the most enduring records ever made – Telstar. Con O’Neill is the Svengali-like genius, while Pam Ferris is Violet, his unfortunate landlady.
Case 39
(2009) 15 12.10AM, CH4 Renee Zellweger (above) is the social worker with a messy personal life, taking a special interest in ten-year-old Lilith – who, she believes, is being mistreated by her parents. All is not as it seems as the film morphs slowly and unconvincingly into a demon-child horror. Leaving (2009) 15 1.25AM, BBC2 Passionate French drama, carried with poise by Kristin Scott Thomas. She’s the bored wife undergoing a transformation – and an affair with Sergi Lopez’s immigrant builder (right) – which ignites emotions of a different kind in her husband.
