Winter’s Bone (2010) 15 Sunday, 11.50pm, BBC1 At 26, Jennifer Lawrence is the toast of Hollywood, a blockbuster heroine with dramatic gravitas, with an Oscar win and three additional nominations to her name – one of which came for this stark drama, her first major role. In a haunting take on Daniel Woodrell’s ‘country noir’ novel, Lawrence (above) plays Ree Dolly, a mountain girl wise beyond her years, who seems to be the only thing binding her destitute family together. With her mother and siblings living hand to mouth, Ree sets out in search of her bail-jumping father – whose bond includes the home they now stand to lose – in order to persuade him to return; it’s an unforgiving task in this godforsaken country. It amounts to a breathtaking breakthrough, so it’s no surprise to find that Lawrence has gone on to bigger – if not always better – things. VT
