NETFLIX

NEW! Black Mirror (Seasons 1-2) Charlie Brooker’s modern Twilight Zone is brilliantly perceptive at its best, such as the episodes exploring the role that social media might play in the future – see the last episode of series one, and the first of series two. A new, Netflix-produced third series is due on October 21. From today. NEW! The Ranch (Season 1B) Second slab of this starry and traditional US comedy about a prodigal son (Ashton Kutcher) who returns to the hard-up ranch run by his taciturn dad (Sam Elliott). From Friday. LAST CHANCE Lie To Me (All three seasons) Confrontational US drama starring Tim Roth as an expert in microexpressions – a human lie detector – who doesn’t care who he upsets. Until Tuesday.

MOVIE The Spy Who Came In From The Cold (1965) PG There’s a new TV version in the planning, but it will be hard to beat this chilly Cold War classic, with Richard Burton on dour form as the agent leading the Communists a merry dance.

AMAZON PRIME

DRAMA Copper (Both seasons) Spit-and-sawdust police show set in New York’s Five Points district in the 1860s – much like Martin Scorsese’s Gangs Of New York.

COMEDY The Danny Thomas Show (Season 5) Danny Thomas plays the comedian Danny Williams, who can’t resist a gig, even to five people in the street, in this 1950s US sitcom. That need to perform often comes at the expense of his family, which gives the series a slightly tragic streak.

NEW! The Collection (Episode 6) The first of the final three episodes of Amazon’s big and lavishly dressed drama, which is set in and around a fashion house in post-war Paris. Tom Riley, as the designer who must hide his genius under a bushel, is proving to be one of the best reasons to watch, along with Frances de la Tour as his mum (left). A new episode arrives every Friday.

MOVIE Shaun The Sheep Movie (2015) U Aardman give TV’s fluff y fave his own big-screen spin-off – and, as you’d expect, the gag rate is bewilderingly high, despite being almost entirely dialogue-free. One for parents to enjoy as much as their kids.

SKY ON DEMAND/ NOW TV

NEW! Grey’s Anatomy (Seasons 1-12) The 12th and most recent season of this medical supersoap was a real return to form, and is worth seeking out. From today.

NEW! DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow (Season 1) Big, blockbuster TV is a hard thing to pull off for an entire season, but this time-hopping US action series, starring Doctor Who’s Arthur Darvill as the head of a misfit superhero gang, pulls it off. From Tuesday. DRAMA Angelby (Season 1) If you’ve been following this Swedish mystery on Wednesdays on ITV Encore, then here’s some good news – all 12 episodes are available to watch on demand.

MOVIE Bridge Of Spies (2015) 12 If The Spy Who Came In From The Cold has whetted your appetite, here’s another Cold War espionage tale from Steven Spielberg. Tom Hanks is the New York lawyer representing a Soviet spy (Mark Rylance) at a trial that’s essentially for show.

BEST OF THE REST

NEW! Reggie Yates: Life And Death In Chicago (BBC3 via iPlayer) Yates’s raw film paints an alarming picture of gun crime, and of police brutality, in the US city. From Tuesday, 10am.

NEW! Zapped (UKTV Play) In an anarchic and original new comedy, James Buckley (left) plays an office worker who finds himself in a world where magic is the norm. This has something of the spirit of Red Dwarf, and comes to Dave on October 13. From Thursday.

PAY MOVIES

Alice Through The Looking Glass (2016) PG (BT TV Store, Sky Store, Virgin) James Bobin (who directed the most recent Muppets movies) helms this followup to Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland. It’s stylish, but lacking Burton’s gleeful lunacy.

Money Monster (2016) 15 (BT TV Store, Sky Store, Virgin) TV tipster George Clooney finds himself in hot water when an irate viewer – who’s just lost his savings thanks to one of Clooney’s ‘sure-fire’ tips – decides it’s payback time. Both from Monday.
