This is it then, not just the final of Bake Off, but the final Bake Off as we know it. Yes, we’ll get two specials this Christmas and it’ll continue in some guise on Channel 4 when it returns in 2018, but the show will never be the same again. How can it be, without the wonderful Mary Berry or the presenters Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, whose innuendo-laden gags have turned the show into a national treasure. Last year, more than 13 million tuned in to see Nadiya take the title; the audience could be even bigger this time for the historic final final as Andrew, Candice and Jane (above, l-r, with Paul Hollywood and Mary) battle for the title of the nation’s finest amateur baker.
