Today’s matinee is a performance of Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, recorded at this year’s Bayreuth Festival and conducted by Axel Kober. Based on a myth from 17thcentury folklore, the story concerns a sailor who has been condemned for eternity to sail his ship. Only once every seven years is he allowed to come ashore to seek redemption by a faithful woman. The baritone John Lundgren plays the Dutchman, with Ricarda Merbeth as Senta, the young lady who may be the answer to his prayers.
The Casebook Of Max And Ivan
6.30PM, RADIO 4 Incompetent private detectives Max and Ivan – otherwise known as the critically acclaimed comedians and actors Max Olesker and Ivan Gonzalez – are back in a Halloween special of their gag-packed crime caper sitcom. A holiday with Ivan’s uncle on the remote Isle of Sudley seems to offer the perfect break. But things go awry as the boys get mixed up in a sinister underworld of murder and human sacrifice.
