When Côtes du Rhône gets it right the wines are absolutely sensational. This heart-warming red has every molecule of flavour in exactly the right spot. It’s ideal paired with the Shepherd’s Pie.

Although you shouldn’t expect the world for less than a fiver, this syrah, carignan and grenache blend is a decent stab at a hearty, rustic, vin de pays and I thoroughly recommend it as an emergency red if you’re trying to save the pennies. Drink it with the Steak Sandwich.
