MONTY’S PLANT OF THE WEEK

-

CALLICARPA BODINIERI VAR. GIRALDII ‘PROFUSION’ Some of the most unusual berries are found on this otherwise plain shrub. Small and violet, they are borne in balled clusters at intervals along the stem. A metallic sheen makes them look like globules of coloured ball bearings. Birds are wary of them so they tend to last well into winter, long after other berries have been gobbled up. The shrub will grow in well-drained, rich soil that’s not too alkaline and likes plenty of light and air, but shelter it from strong winds. Prune in early spring, cutting back to a permanent framework.
