Like ET, it’s sci-fi fantasy grounded by ordinary family dynamics – though it probably goes without saying that it’s not as good as ET.

For his first US film, Kazakh director Timur Bekmambetov (of Night Watch fame) comes out all guns blazing. Brit James McAvoy is the office worker discovering his seemingly unlikely destiny, while Angelina Jolie (above) is the woman recruiting him for a deadly mission.

One of Quentin Tarantino’s best, this marks a magnificent return to the screen for 1970s exploitation queen Pam Grier – and for Robert Forster. Her Jackie Brown is a woman mixing with dangerous criminals to make ends meet. Forster’s bail bondsman is her devoted ally.
