Like ET, it’s sci-fi fantasy grounded by ordinary family dynamics – though it probably goes without saying that it’s not as good as ET.

For his first US film, Kazakh director Timur Bekmambeto­v (of Night Watch fame) comes out all guns blazing. Brit James McAvoy is the office worker discoverin­g his seemingly unlikely destiny, while Angelina Jolie (above) is the woman recruiting him for a deadly mission.

One of Quentin Tarantino’s best, this marks a magnificen­t return to the screen for 1970s exploitati­on queen Pam Grier – and for Robert Forster. Her Jackie Brown is a woman mixing with dangerous criminals to make ends meet. Forster’s bail bondsman is her devoted ally.
